After a successful exhibition at Lyme Regis’ Malthouse Gallery in July, Flotsam Too will drift slowly down the coast to wash up at ‘The Beachcomber’ on Teignmouth’s seafront for a week beginning Saturday 10th to Saturday 17th September.
Inspired by so-called detritus, what has been left behind and the recycling of materials, six artists and makers take the south coast seashore as their theme to present paintings, photography, ceramics, jewellery and sculpture curated by Alison Shelton Brown, all at affordable prices.
Landscape painter, Jonathan Mulvaney is constantly drawn to the early light and busy-ness of harbours, whereas Hazel Dormer paints the birds which inhabit the shoreline. Daniel Richardson’s ceramic vessels often feature the magical interaction of ‘tidelines’ when two glazes meet, and Robin Shelton explores chemical interchanges of plants using an experimental photographic eco-printing technique. Anthony Wong creates high-end precious jewellery but loves to also experiment with ‘poor’ materials, and this echoes with Alison Shelton Brown’s passion for combining sculptural ceramics with sea-twine and found fibres to tell stories of the state of our seas and environmental issues.
As well as having work on sale, there will also be the chance to see artists at work as Robin, Anthony and Alison will be in residence during the week. Each day they will be out early exploring the beach for inspiration and matter to bring back to The Beachcomber; experimenting with new ideas either individually or collectively, searching for potential outcomes for new bodies of work in the future.
